150th Celebrations
2009 marked an important milestone in the history of the church building.
The present church replaces the original one built in 1775 (now demolished) sited at the entrance to Rackvernal Road.
In addition to the High Street Methodist Society, there were also churches at Redfield Road, Stones Cross (now Salvation Army) and Welton.
To mark the year, various events were held such as:
-
A creativity exhibition with the church full of exhibits showing examples of the talents of Church friends and members, young and old. All areas of arts and crafts were exhibited such as photography, poetry, handwriting, painting, stained glass, and knitting.
-
A photo exhibition entitled A year in the life of the church. The photos for this were taken over the previous year by various groups of the church and also the regular hirers of our premises.
-
A flower festival and photographic exhibition which served to thank God and celebrate the past, to show various aspects of the life and work of the present Church family and help us look forward with hope for the future.
-
A variety concert with various excellent acts from within our Church community.
-
A tea dance, a Church family lunch, a play depicting the history of the church and a couple of concerts.
-
To commemorate the 150th Anniversary Celebrations a mosaic was made by several church members and friends. Images on the plaques depict the various aspects of the Church’s life, for example: a pair of hands in prayer; a bible; a cricket bat and ball representing the fellowship shared by our cricket team; a tea cup to represent the weekly coffee mornings and lunches provided by the Church and of course an image of the church building itself. This mosaic is in the link building between the church and the hall.
