Church and Community            -            Service and Outreach

Church Project

Midsomer Norton Methodist Church has always had a community outreach programme, but since the start of this millennium, a specific charitable project has been nominated for each Methodist year, by democratic vote by members and friends.

A notional target has been set and has been exceeded every year. The chosen cause may be local, national or international. Events held have included concerts and country dances, etc. together with other fund raising activities and personal gifts. Over £34,000 has been raised to date. In addition to the annual project, the church has generously supported national and international disaster appeals.

1st September each year sees a new Church Project start.  In the previous months church folk have nominated various charities and then voted and the one with most votes becomes the year’s chosen charity for the Church Project, which has a target of £3,000.

For the project year just ended we raised £4,965 for
The Leonard Cheshire Home at Timsbury.

In 2011/12, until the 31st August, we will be fundraising for:

Jeevothayam FarmJeevothayam Farm in Murungan, Sri Lanka

The farm at Jeevothayam was obtained by the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka.  It is a 50 acre site set close to a river and a most beautiful ‘tank’ (large lake) with most of the area being farmed, growing paddy (rice) and coconuts and housing a brickworks.  It was a centre of agricultural training for young people and also housed a boys’ home.
The project was self-sufficient and provided income that supported the work of the Mannar Methodist Circuit.

The problem is that this area in the North West of Sri Lanka was one of the areas worst affected by the civil war with severe security restrictions and with communications being so badly affected that it was difficult to market produce.  Much of the land went out of production and the neighbours’ livestock often strayed onto the land which had become unfenced.  The water supply drawn from the river by wind-powered pumps was limited because the wind-mills were destroyed.

Now that the civil war is over the Methodist Church is planning to bring the farm back into production.  The aim is to provide training in agriculture and animal husbandry and to generate profit that will sustain the work of the boys’ home (a western aid agency has recently announced that it will no longer support the work of the boys’ home).

The Church estimates that it will cost about £8,000 to get the farm back up and running.  The extensive list of things to buy include, 15 piglets (c£570), 50 chicks (£150), 8 goats at £25 each, £1,000 to restore the fences, £750 to restore the water supply, and then there will be coconut trees and papaw trees and much else.

Our contribution to this project will enable the Church to undertake valuable work in agricultural training and in becoming self-sufficient again in an area that has been devastated by warfare and will rebuild hope.

So, thank you for taking on the project this year.
