It all started with an idea from a member of the Peasedown St John Methodist Church. “What if all Christian denominations, got together on Whit Sunday to hold a Fun-day for EVERYONE, and it was FREE!”
And so, WHITFUNDAY was born.
It was very slow going to start with, but with a very small committee and the encouragement of the Reverend Ruth Farrant, the 1st Whitfunday took place and proved to be a success, which continued to grow year after year, and now… we have just celebrated the 6th Whitfunday. It is estimated that approx. 800 people passed through the gates of Somervale School, where the event took place on the school field.
We had all types of activities from Crafts, Face Painting, Bell Ringing, Glass Engraving, Morris Dancers, Archery, Quad Bikes, Swing Boats, Long Bouncy Slide, Christian Bikers, Miniature Steam Engine, Street Organ, and music provided by The Paulton Band.
There was a Tea and Refreshment Tent, where tea, coffee, squashes or just water were supplied all afternoon and later, everyone was able to get a nice plate of sandwiches and cakes (all donated by members of the Churches).
We had a Professional Guest Entertainer and Worship Leader, Jon Bonner, from Bristol. He entertained the public and brought the day to a conclusion with a Celebration time.
Whitfunday has been a bond-forming idea that has brought most of the Churches in the area together. Friendships have been made, that just wouldn’t have been, without the Area Churches Together ‘Whitfunday’.
So ‘Three Cheers’ for WHITFUNDAY, and long may it continue.
